Recycling Opportunities

First Churchers have been recycling through the annual Cranberry Fair, not your typical church fair/fare, for decades. We are expanding the concept of recycling through the fair, to recycling every day, culminating in November with the Cranberry Fair. We are fortunate in Amherst and surrounding towns to have many opportunities to recycle. But there are some new options, that we may not have thought about before. In an attempt to be responsible environmentally, easily accessbile to everyone, and tidy at the same time, soon you will see several recycling containers around the church building. They will be clearly marked with what goes where and who is the contact person for taking care of that particular item. Here is the list so far. If you think of other things we can recycle, and would be willing take the responsibility for keeping the container clean and tidy and would be willing to empty it regularly, please

Reader to Reader

Reader To Reader is a non-profit organization based at the Cadigan Center of Amherst College, the vision of David Mazur. Its goal is to provide books for school and public libraries in communities needing help stocking their shelves. The books are sent completely without charge, with shipping also paid by Reader to Reader.  Reader to Reader has shipped over 1,200,000 books to areas most affected by Hurricane Katrina; in addition, books continue to be shipped to other poor communities, inner-city schools, and Native American Reservations. Each year books are shipped to about 400 different locations.  In order to receive donations, a librarian needs simply to contact David Mazur dmazor@readertoreader.org and express the need.  Reader To Reader also offers mentoring relationships between Amherst College students and students in schools near and far, where both partners of the mentoring relationship read the same book and then participate in online discussions about it. Information about these programs and about how to support them with either volunteer service, book, or financial donations can be found on their website, www.readertoreader.org

Clean Styroform

Tom Lindeman has been taking clean styroform to the Framinham recycling center several times a year for the last few years. There are two requirements if you want to join in this effort. Just styroform and it has to be clean. The bin will be appearing soon.

Animal Shelter

The animal shelter collects, towels, blankets, sheets and other materials for the animals. Susan Boone volunteers at the shelter weekly. She has volunteered to take any of our donations to the shelter. For anyone who knits and wants to use up some scraps, knit small blankets for the animals.

Not Bread Alone

Many of the Not Bread Alone tablecloths and towels are in sad, faded and ragged shape.  When you Spring-clean your fabric stash and your linen closet, please donate clean usable dish and hand towels directly to the NBA kitchen.  Tablecloths and tablecloth fabrics should be bright, colorful, washable and as wrinkle resistant as possible.  The size: approximately 2 1/2 to 3 yards long by 45 to 48 " wide.  A simple hem on the non-selvedge edge is all that is needed.  If you don't sew, or have fabrics less than 2 1/2 yards, you may also leave fabrics. Look for the Not Bread Alone Recycle Bin.

Survival Center

The Survival Center box is moving to be with the other collection boxes. While they collect a variety of items, see their website:  http://www.people.umass.edu/support/asc/index.html, we will only be collecting clean and usable season-appropriate clothing and linens at this time.

Cranberry Fair

If what you want to recycle doesn't have a container yet, there is always the Cranberry fair. Items can be brought to church during office hours. Ask Ruth for the key and place your items in Room 3 off the dining room. Please do not leave stuff outside the door. The Cranberry Fair sorters will not be working on the items until the fall, but we can still collect stuff.
